Strong Group-Pilipinas will face a formidable challenge as they take on Japan’s Under-22 national team in the 43rd William Jones Cup later today at 1:00 p.m.
The Philippine-backed squad will be without key players Angelo Kouame, Rhenz Abando, and Tajuan Agee against Japan due to injuries and illness.
Kouame is sidelined with a knee issue, Abando is out with a hand injury, and Agee is dealing with an illness.
Their absence comes at a crucial juncture in the tournament as Strong Group-Pilipinas seeks to maintain their perfect 5-0 record.
Strong Group head coach Charles Tiu acknowledged the difficulties his team has faced throughout the tournament but emphasized the importance of staying resilient and focused.
“The tournament has been tough so far. We are in our fifth game in six days with two more to go. But we have no excuses. This might be the time to rest our guys before we take on the home teams,” said Tiu.
Kouame and Agee have been instrumental in the team’s success, playing in all five games so far.
Kouame is averaging 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while Agee has been a standout with averages of 12.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game.
Abando, in his four games, has contributed 6.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per contest.
In their absence, much will be expected from the young trio of Jonathan Manalili, Tony Ynot, and Allen Liwag.
These players will need to step up and fill the void left by their injured teammates against a hungry Japanese squad that is currently 3-2 in the standings.
Japan is lead by the young duo of Leon Watanabe and Yu Kibayashi, both standing at 6-foot-8.
Despite their impressive record, Tiu reminded his team that the championship is not yet secured and that each game remains critical.
“Despite our record, the championship is not yet secured. We need to win today or tomorrow against Chinese-Taipei B to make sure that Sunday’s game against Chinese-Taipei A will be for the championship,” Tiu stated.
